What’s on a handyman invoice

Every line is one part of the handyman job, priced on its own so the client can see what each part of the job costs.

Line itemUnitWhy it’s its own line
Patch small drywall hole and sandeachA flat price per patch is easier to approve than an hourly guess.
Re-caulk tub and shower perimeter jointper linear ftOld caulk has to come out before new goes in; priced by the foot of joint.
Pull and reset toilet with new wax ringeachA common fix with a known time. A flat line makes it easy to say yes to.
Replace leaking lavatory fauceteachPriced per faucet. If the client bought the faucet, it’s labor only.
Replace interior door knob seteachHardware swaps are quick, counted tasks that clients often add to a list.
Adjust and rehang sagging interior dooreachDoor adjustments are separate from replacing the door, and much cheaper.
Replace damaged baseboard runper linear ftBaseboard is measured by the foot, so the price follows the damage.
Prime and repaint patched wall areaper sq ftPatches need paint to disappear. A separate line makes clear whether that’s included.
Replace cracked floor tileeachEach tile is careful removal and resetting, priced each.

How handyman jobs are billed

Handyman jobs are usually one visit, so the invoice goes out when the work is done and is due on receipt. List each completed task as its own line, including the ones added on site, so the client sees exactly what they’re paying for.

For a long list spread over several visits, bill each visit separately or take a deposit for materials up front. Show the trip or minimum charge as its own line when it applies.

Keep receipts for the parts you bought and list the parts as their own lines, at cost or with the markup your estimate stated. Clients compare parts on an invoice with store prices, and listing them openly heads off questions. For repeat clients, a short note of what’s still on their list helps you book the next visit.

Handyman invoice template FAQ

01Is this handyman invoice template free?
Yes. Download the PDF, Word or Excel file and use it for as many jobs as you like. There’s no sign-up.
02Can I bill a deposit with this template?
Yes. Bill the deposit as its own invoice, then record it under Amount paid on the final invoice. In the Excel version, the balance due subtracts it for you.
03Can clients pay the invoice online?
Not from the template: it’s a file you send. In BuildWell, every invoice goes out as a link your client can pay by card or US bank transfer through Stripe once you connect it, with no BuildWell fee on top, or with the Zelle, Venmo or check details you list.
04Hourly or flat rate: which is better for handyman work?
Flat task prices are easier for clients to approve and for you to repeat. Hourly with a minimum suits jobs you can’t size until you start. Many handymen use flat prices for common tasks and an hourly line for everything else.
05Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work?
It depends on your state and city. Many require a license for electrical work and for plumbing beyond simple fixture swaps, and some limit unlicensed work by job size. Check your local rules before that work goes on an estimate.
06Should I charge a trip fee?
A trip or minimum charge covers the drive and setup on small jobs. Put it in the terms, as the template does, and show it as a line on the invoice when it applies.
