Estimating software, in short

  • Itemized lines with labor and materials on each
  • Materials priced at stores near the job
  • Labor at your area’s wage for each trade
  • Your overhead, markups, sales tax and permit fee
  • Change any line before you send
  • Clients read and sign on their phone

From a description to line items

Tell BuildWell what the job is: “gut the hall bath, tub to walk-in shower, new vanity and toilet, tile to the ceiling.” Say it out loud while you walk the job, type it, or add photos.

BuildWell asks the few questions that change the price, such as who supplies the vanity. When the plan of the work looks right, it builds the estimate line by line.

  • The plan shows the work in the order it happens
  • Each line is a unit of real work with its own labor hours and materials
  • Lines like demolition, rough-in, cement board, waterproofing, tile and fixtures
  • Change any quantity, hour or price
  • Add a line, or delete one you don’t need

Every price backed by local data

The AI decides what the job needs and how much of it. Real data sets the prices.

When a material has no store price, the estimate says so plainly. Any suggested price is marked as a suggestion, and you confirm it or enter your own before the estimate can be sent.

  • Materials matched to real products and priced at a store near the job’s ZIP
  • Store prices checked within the last 30 days
  • A link to where each material price came from
  • Labor at each trade’s median wage in your metro, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics
  • Your overhead and markup added on top of the wage
  • Nothing goes to a client with a blank or unchecked number on it

Labor priced trade by trade

A bathroom remodel isn’t one wage. BuildWell plans each trade’s hours at that trade’s local median rate where the job is.

If the plan doesn’t match your crew, change it. Price your time and your materials the way your business actually works.

  • The plumber’s hours at the plumber’s rate
  • The electrician’s hours at the electrician’s rate
  • The tile setter’s hours at the tile setter’s rate
  • Crew faster or slower than the plan? Change the hours
  • Pay more than the local median? Change the rate
  • Your edits stay on that estimate, and the totals update as you type
  • Labor markup and overhead are set apart from material markup

Your numbers, your settings

Set your pricing once, and every new estimate starts with it. Change it on any one estimate when a job calls for it.

When you type in your own price for a material, BuildWell remembers it and uses it on your later estimates. Your pricing builds up as you work.

  • Labor overhead, labor markup, material markup, sales tax and permit fee
  • Separate material and labor markups
  • A percentage discount on the whole job, before tax
  • Sales tax on materials, preset for the job’s location
  • Client-supplied items listed at no charge
  • Export any estimate as a CSV file

A catalog when you want to build it yourself

Not every estimate starts with the AI. Build lines from the catalog, write your own, and mix the two freely on the same estimate.

Group lines by job step so the client sees the work in order. Then choose how much detail the printed estimate shows.

  • Search BuildWell’s catalog of units of work
  • Catalog lines come with their labor and materials already planned
  • Write a custom labor or material line with your own price
  • Show or hide quantities, unit prices, discounts and tax, each on its own

Revisions that keep the paper trail

Clients change their minds. When they do, revise the estimate instead of starting over.

Before you send, nothing is locked. Once it’s sent, the estimate is read-only, so what the client is reading on their phone is always what you meant to send.

  • BuildWell keeps the original estimate
  • The old link is retired, so the old price can’t be signed by mistake
  • You get a new version to edit and send for a fresh signature
  • You always know which price the client agreed to, and when
  • Before sending, change lines, the client or the look as often as you like

Sent, signed and tracked

Text or email the estimate as a link, with your own message, from your own number or email address. The client reads it on their phone with your logo and terms.

If you’re sitting at the kitchen table together, collect the signature in person on your phone instead.

  • The client accepts and signs with a finger, or declines
  • You see when they open it and how many times
  • You get a notice when they decide

From estimate to invoice without retyping

Once the estimate is signed, create the invoice from it. Ask for a deposit when you send it.

  • The labor, materials and permit lines come across grouped by job step
  • The discount and tax carry over
  • Clients pay by card or bank transfer from the invoice link when you’ve connected Stripe

Estimating software FAQ

01Which trades does BuildWell estimate?
Remodels, repairs and the common trades: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, tile, flooring, roofing, siding, decks and fences, doors and windows, and concrete. It plans each trade’s labor at that trade’s local wage.
02How accurate are the prices?
Materials are store prices near the job checked within 30 days, and labor is the local median wage plus your overhead and markup. Review every estimate before you send it; you know the job and the site better than any software does.
03What happens when a material has no local price?
The estimate flags that line. If it offers a suggested price, it’s marked as a suggestion; you confirm it or enter the price you’ll pay, and BuildWell remembers your price for later estimates. The estimate can’t be sent until every flagged price is confirmed.
04Can I add my own line items?
Yes. Add a line from BuildWell’s catalog or write your own labor or material line with your price, and delete anything you don’t need. You can also describe a change and let the AI revise the estimate.
05Can I see where a material price came from?
Yes. Priced materials link to the store listing the price came from, so you can check the product and the price yourself before you send the estimate, or swap in a product you prefer.
06Can I get an estimate out of BuildWell?
Yes. Share it as a PDF or an image, or export it as a CSV file with each line’s step, type, item, quantity, unit, unit price and amount, followed by the totals, for a spreadsheet or your bookkeeper.
07Does it work in Spanish?
Yes. The app works in English and Spanish, and any estimate can be printed in either, whatever language you use the app in.
08Can I estimate from my computer?
Yes. BuildWell works on iPhone, Android and the web with one account. Start an estimate on site and finish it at your desk; everything stays in sync.
09How do clients approve an estimate?
You send a link by text or email. The client opens it in any browser, reads it, and accepts and signs on their phone, or declines. They don’t need an app or an account.
10How much does BuildWell cost?
BuildWell costs $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year, with a 3-day free trial. One subscription covers iPhone, Android and the web, and you can cancel anytime.
