The electrical invoice template, with its line items listed

What’s on a electrical invoice

Every line is one part of the electrical job, priced on its own so the client can see what each part of the job costs.

Line itemUnitWhy it’s its own line
Branch circuit rough-in run 12/2 cableper linear ftNew circuits are priced by the foot of cable from the panel, so distance shows in the price.
Fish cable through finished wall or ceilingper linear ftFishing through finished walls is slower than open framing and is priced that way.
Old work device box cut-ineachEach new box in an existing wall is cutting, fishing and setting, priced each.
Standard duplex receptacle installeachDevices are counted, so adding three outlets changes the count and the total follows.
GFCI receptacle installeachGFCI devices cost more and take longer than standard ones, and code requires them in wet locations.
Remodel recessed LED light installeachRecessed lights are priced per fixture; the count is the price.
Ceiling fan install with rated brace boxeachA fan needs a box rated for its weight. The line covers the brace, not just hanging the fan.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installeachAlarms are often required when a permit is pulled. Listing them avoids a surprise at inspection.
200 amp main service panel replacementeachA panel change involves a permit, an inspection and the utility, so it’s always its own line.
Drywall patch at electrical access openingseachAccess holes need patching. A line settles who closes the wall.
Circuit testing, panel labeling and final cleanupeachTesting and labeling are the last step of a correct job; naming them shows they were done.

  3. 3

    Bill what was done

Enter the quantities actually installed, in linear feet and each, and record any deposit already received under Amount paid.

  4. 4

    Send it

Add the invoice date, a due date and how to pay, save it as a PDF and send it.

How electrical jobs are billed

Service calls and small device jobs are invoiced on completion. For panel changes and new circuits, many electricians take a deposit for equipment and bill the balance after the final inspection passes, which makes the inspection a natural milestone on the invoice.

If the count changed on site, an extra receptacle or one fewer fixture, bill the actual count line by line so it matches the estimate the homeowner signed. Keep permit fees on their own line.

Put the permit number and inspection result on the final invoice when there was one; homeowners may need it for insurance or when they sell. For panel and EV charger jobs, list the equipment installed with its rating, such as the panel amperage or the circuit size, so the invoice doubles as a record of the work.

Electrical invoice template FAQ

01Is this electrical invoice template free?
Yes. Download the PDF, Word or Excel file and use it for as many jobs as you like. There’s no sign-up.
02Can I bill a deposit with this template?
Yes. Bill the deposit as its own invoice, then record it under Amount paid on the final invoice. In the Excel version, the balance due subtracts it for you.
03Can clients pay the invoice online?
Not from the template: it’s a file you send. In BuildWell, every invoice goes out as a link your client can pay by card or US bank transfer through Stripe once you connect it, with no BuildWell fee on top, or with the Zelle, Venmo or check details you list.
04Should I price electrical work per device or by the hour?
Per-device pricing is easier for homeowners to approve and compare, and it’s how this template is laid out. Hourly suits troubleshooting where you can’t see the problem yet; add an hourly line with a minimum for those calls.
05Where do permit fees go?
On their own line, or in the terms. Fees vary by city and by job, so the template leaves them for you to add.
06Does the template cover a panel upgrade?
Yes, it has a line for a 200 amp main service panel replacement. Add utility coordination, the permit and any grounding or bonding corrections as their own lines if the job needs them.
