The plumbing quote template, with its line items listed

What’s on a plumbing quote

Every line is one part of the plumbing job, priced on its own so the client can see exactly what the fixed price covers.

Line itemUnitWhy it’s its own line
Toilet removal and disposaleachTaking out and hauling away the old toilet is separate from setting the new one, so the client sees both halves of the swap.
Toilet set and connecteachSetting a fixture is priced per fixture, whether you supply it or the client does.
Kitchen sink and faucet installationeachA per-fixture line with its own hours. If the client buys the faucet, the labor stays and the material comes off.
PEX water supply line runper linear ftSupply pipe is priced by the foot, so the line grows with the distance to the fixture.
2 in PVC DWV drain line runper linear ftDrain and vent pipe is a different material and a different pace from supply, so it gets its own per-foot line.
Shower valve rough-in with backingeachRough-in happens with the walls open, before tile. A separate line lets you bill it as its own stage.
Rough plumbing pressure test and leak checkeachThe test is real time on site and often an inspection step. A line shows it was done.
Water heater drain down removal and haul offeachDraining and hauling the old tank is work clients often assume is free.
Tank water heater installation and connectionseachUsually the biggest single item on a service job, and one that often needs its own permit.
Plumbing access panel and drywall patcheachOpening a wall to reach pipe means patching it after. Listing it settles who closes the wall.
Final cleanup and debris haul offeachCleanup and haul-away are part of the job; naming them shows they’re included.
How to fill it in

Your plumbing quote in four steps

  1. 1

    Add your details

Put in your business name, phone, email and license number once, and save the file as your master copy.

  2. 2

    Measure the job

Count the fixtures, valves and connections, and measure new supply and drain runs in linear feet from the main or the stack to each fixture.

  3. 3

Fix a price for each line

Enter a quantity and a fixed price on each line the job needs, in each and linear feet. Delete the lines you don’t need, and write what the price assumes in the terms.

  4. 4

    Send it for acceptance

Fill in the blanks in the terms, save it as a PDF and send it. The client signs the acceptance line, and the price holds for the work listed.

How plumbing jobs are quoted

A plumbing quote is a promise to do a set list of work for a set price, so it works best on jobs you can see end to end: a water heater swap, a toilet and vanity replacement, a kitchen sink with a new faucet and shutoffs. The client gets one number to say yes to, and you carry the risk of the job taking longer than planned.

The risk sits behind the walls. A quote for a shower valve or a drain reroute should say what the price assumes, such as access from an open wall, pipe in workable condition and no rot around the old valve, and what happens if that turns out wrong. Keep the terms that put hidden damage outside the price, and quote the access panel and patch as their own line so opening the wall isn’t a surprise.

Where you can’t see the job yet, such as a slow drain or a leak you haven’t traced, quote the diagnosis instead of the repair, or send an estimate with an hourly line. A fixed price on unknown work is the quickest way to lose money on a service call.

Plumbing quote template FAQ

01Is this plumbing quote template free?
Yes. Download the PDF, Word or Excel file and use it for as many jobs as you like. There’s no sign-up.
02How is this plumbing quote different from the estimate template?
Both list the same plumbing line items. The quote’s terms make the price fixed for the work listed and put anything else outside it, while the estimate’s terms leave room for the final price to change. Use the quote when you can see the whole job and stand behind one number.
03Can BuildWell send a quote for me?
Yes, with a subscription. Describe the job and BuildWell prices it line by line from stores near the job and your metro’s labor rates, and you can title the document Quote instead of Estimate. Your client opens it as a link, then signs and accepts it on their phone. It costs $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year after a 3-day free trial.
04When should a plumber send a quote instead of an estimate?
Send a quote when you can see the whole job and can stand behind one price, like a fixture swap or a water heater replacement. Send an estimate, or quote only the diagnosis, when the problem is still hidden behind a wall or under a slab.
05How do I protect a fixed price from hidden damage?
Say what the price assumes and keep the term that prices damage found behind walls or floors as a change before work continues. Quoting access and patching as their own line also shows the client what opening the wall costs.
06Should the quote include the fixture itself?
Say which way it goes. If you supply the fixture, it’s in the line price. If the client buys it, the line is labor and connection only, and the fixture carries the manufacturer’s warranty, not yours.
