How to fill it in

Your carpentry quote in four steps

  1. 1

    Add your details

Put in your business name, phone, email and license number once, and save the file as your master copy.

  2. 2

    Measure the job

Measure baseboard, shoe and crown in linear feet room by room, wall paneling in square feet, and count doors, windows and closets.

  3. 3

Fix a price for each line

Enter a quantity and a fixed price on each line the job needs, in linear feet, each and square feet. Delete the lines you don’t need, and write what the price assumes in the terms.

  4. 4

    Send it for acceptance

Fill in the blanks in the terms, save it as a PDF and send it. The client signs the acceptance line, and the price holds for the work listed.

How carpentry jobs are quoted

Trim carpentry suits a fixed quote because nearly everything on it can be measured or counted before you start: the feet of baseboard and crown in each room, the doors, the window casings, the closets. A client trimming out a remodel or replacing all the doors on a floor wants one price, and once you’ve measured, you can give it.

The risk is in the house, not the trim. Out-of-level floors, bowed walls and corners that aren’t square slow every cut and need scribing, shimming or wider caulk lines. Older homes add plaster that’s hard to nail into and jambs that sit proud of the wall. Check a few walls with a level before you fix the price, write what it assumes, and keep extra scribing outside it. If new flooring is going in, say whether the base goes on before or after it.

Material choice can change the price as much as the measurements. Stain-grade wood needs tighter joints than painted MDF, so quote it as its own lines if the client is undecided. Say who buys the doors and hardware, and hold the price only as long as your lumber supplier holds theirs.

Carpentry quote template FAQ

01Is this carpentry quote template free?
Yes. Download the PDF, Word or Excel file and use it for as many jobs as you like. There’s no sign-up.
02How is this carpentry quote different from the estimate template?
Both list the same carpentry line items. The quote’s terms make the price fixed for the work listed and put anything else outside it, while the estimate’s terms leave room for the final price to change. Use the quote when you can see the whole job and stand behind one number.
03Can BuildWell send a quote for me?
Yes, with a subscription. Describe the job and BuildWell prices it line by line from stores near the job and your metro’s labor rates, and you can title the document Quote instead of Estimate. Your client opens it as a link, then signs and accepts it on their phone. It costs $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year after a 3-day free trial.
04Can I give a fixed price for trimming out a whole house?
Yes, once you’ve measured each room and counted the doors, windows and closets. Build the price from the lines room by room, name the material and profile, and write what the price assumes about level floors and straight walls so extra scribing isn’t on you.
05How do I quote trim in an older house?
Walk it with a level and look for bowed walls, uneven floors and plaster that won’t hold a nail well. Say in the quote what the price assumes, and keep extra scribing, shimming and jamb extensions outside it. A higher rate per foot may suit houses where every cut needs fitting.
06Should a carpentry quote include door hardware?
Say either way. Hanging a prehung door doesn’t include a knob set or hinges in a new finish unless you say so. If you’re supplying hardware, list it with the door; if the client is, say you’re installing what they provide.
