What’s on a carpentry estimate
Every line is one part of the carpentry job, priced on its own so the client can see what each part of the job costs.
| Line item | Unit | Why it’s its own line |
|---|---|---|
| Remove existing baseboard and shoe molding | per linear ft | Old trim has to come off first, priced by the foot. |
| Install prehung interior door unit | each | Doors are priced each, including shimming, hanging and adjusting. |
| Install interior door casing set | each | Casing is priced per opening, both sides, separately from the door. |
| Install primed MDF baseboard | per linear ft | Baseboard is the bulk of most trim jobs, priced by the linear foot. |
| Install shoe molding at baseboard | per linear ft | Shoe is optional on many floors. Its own line keeps it a choice. |
| Install primed crown molding | per linear ft | Crown is slower per foot than base because of the compound cuts and the ceiling work. |
| Install beadboard wainscot paneling | per sq ft | Paneling covers wall area, so it’s priced by the square foot. |
| Install window casing with stool and apron | each | Window trim is priced per window: stool, apron and casing. |
| Install wire closet shelf and rod | each | Closet systems are counted, one line per closet. |
| Fill nail holes and caulk trim joints | per linear ft | Filling and caulking is what makes trim look finished; the client should see it’s included. |
| Prime and paint installed trim | per linear ft | Painting may be yours or the painter’s. A separate line makes clear who’s doing it. |

How carpentry jobs are priced
Finish carpenters price running trim by the linear foot and everything else by the piece. Baseboard, shoe, crown and chair rail are measured around each room; doors, window casings, closet systems and stair parts are counted. The rate per foot changes with the profile: crown is slower than baseboard because of the angles and the ceiling, and stain-grade wood is slower than primed MDF because every joint shows.
Doors are the line to watch. A prehung door is priced to hang, shim and adjust, and the casing is usually a separate price per opening, both sides. Keeping them apart shows the client what a door costs installed and what it costs to trim out, and lets you price a door swap that keeps the old casing.
Finishing is the other question. Filling nail holes and caulking joints is part of a clean trim job and belongs on the estimate. Painting may be yours or the painter’s; list it as its own line or exclude it in the terms so nobody assumes.
