The window and door estimate template, with its line items listed

What’s on a window and door estimate

Every line is one part of the window and door job, priced on its own so the client can see what each part of the job costs.

Line itemUnitWhy it’s its own line
Existing window removal and disposaleachRemoving the old unit is priced per opening and depends on how it was installed.
Exterior door removal and disposaleachOld exterior doors come out with their frames, priced each.
Window rough opening framingeachChanging an opening’s size means framing work, priced per opening.
Insert replacement window installationeachInsert windows fit the existing frame and go in faster than full-frame windows.
New construction window installationeachA full-frame window goes to the rough opening and is flashed in, so it’s priced differently from an insert.
Exterior prehung entry door installationeachEntry doors are priced each, including the threshold, shimming and adjustment.
Sliding patio door installationeachPatio doors are large, heavy units with their own price per door.
Rough opening air sealing and foam insulationeachSealing the gap around each unit is easy to skip and matters for drafts. A line shows it’s done.
Window stool and apron trim installationeachInterior window trim is priced per window, separately from the install.
Door casing installationper linear ftCasing is measured around each opening in linear feet.
Exterior door and window perimeter caulkingper linear ftOutside caulking is the last seal against water, priced by the foot.

How window and door jobs are priced

Windows and doors are priced by the unit. Each opening gets a price to remove the old unit, install the new one and finish it inside and out, and the type of install sets the price. An insert replacement window fits into the existing frame and goes in quickly. A full-frame or new construction window means removing the frame down to the rough opening, which costs more but lets you repair rot and flash the opening properly.

Doors follow the same logic: a slab on an existing jamb is quick, a prehung unit is more, and an entry or patio door with new framing, threshold and hardware is more again. When an opening changes size, framing and a header are their own lines.

Interior trim, exterior trim and caulking are where window bids differ most. List them per opening or per linear foot so the client sees what will be finished and what’s left for the painter. Units are usually ordered to size and can take weeks to arrive, so put the ordering and lead-time terms in writing.

Window and door estimate template FAQ

01Is this window and door estimate template free?
Yes. Download the PDF, Word or Excel file and use it for as many jobs as you like. There’s no sign-up.
02Why are the prices blank?
Prices for window and door work depend on your area, your suppliers and your crew, so the template lists the work and its unit and leaves the quantities and prices to you. In the Excel version, each line, the subtotal, the tax and the total calculate themselves once you fill them in.
03Can BuildWell price the estimate for me?
Yes, with a subscription. Describe the job by voice, text or photos and BuildWell lists the line items, prices materials at stores near the job (checked within 30 days) and labor at your metro’s median wage for each trade, plus your overhead and markup. It costs $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year after a 3-day free trial.
04Should I price windows per unit or by size?
Per unit is what clients understand, and it’s how this template is laid out. Some installers set their unit prices by size range; add the size to each line’s description so it’s clear which price applies.
05What’s the difference between an insert and a new construction install?
An insert window goes inside the existing frame. A new construction, or full-frame, window replaces the frame down to the rough opening. The template has a line for each so you can price the one the job needs.
06Should trim and caulking be separate lines?
Yes. They’re where bids differ most, and separate lines make it clear whether each opening will be finished inside and out.
