Square foot
A square foot is a unit of area equal to a square one foot on each side, found by multiplying length by width.
Flooring, tile, drywall, siding and paint coverage are all measured in square feet. A 12-by-14-foot room has 168 square feet of floor.
Measure irregular spaces by breaking them into rectangles and adding them up. For walls, multiply the perimeter by the ceiling height, then subtract large openings such as windows and doors if your method calls for it. Many painters don’t subtract small openings, since cutting in around them takes time anyway.
Materials are often sold in other units: drywall by the sheet, tile and flooring by the box, paint by coverage per gallon. Convert square feet to purchase units, round up and add a waste factor.
Price per square foot is a handy quick check and a common way clients compare bids, but it hides a lot. Two kitchens with the same square footage can differ greatly in cost. Use it to sanity-check an itemized estimate, not to replace one.
