Linear foot
A linear foot is a measurement of length in feet along a line, regardless of the material’s width or thickness.
Linear feet measure things that are sold or installed by length: baseboard and crown molding, fencing, gutters, pipe and conduit, countertop runs, cabinets, edging and caulk lines. A 12-foot board is 12 linear feet whether it’s a 1×4 or a 2×12.
To measure, add up the length of every run. For baseboard in a 12-by-14-foot room, the perimeter is 52 feet; subtract door openings and add waste for cuts and joints.
Linear-foot pricing is common for labor too: fence per linear foot installed, gutters per linear foot, cabinets per linear foot of wall. Make sure the client knows what the price per foot includes, such as posts, gates, end caps, corners or downspouts, since those are often priced separately.
Don’t confuse linear feet with board feet, a measure of lumber volume, or with square feet, which measure area. On estimates, write the unit next to every quantity (LF for linear feet, SF for square feet, EA for each) so the client and your crew read the numbers the same way.
