Waste factor
A waste factor is a percentage added to measured material quantities to cover offcuts, breakage, pattern matching and installation mistakes.
No job uses exactly the measured amount. Tile breaks, boards have defects, the last piece in a row is too short to reuse, and patterns need matching. The waste factor accounts for all of that.
The right amount depends on the material and the layout. A common starting point is about 10% for a straightforward flooring or tile layout, going higher for diagonal or herringbone patterns, large-format tile, small rooms with many cuts, and patterned carpet or wallpaper. Roofs with many hips and valleys need more than a simple gable.
Apply waste to the measured quantity, then round up to the purchase unit: full boxes, sheets or bundles. Running short costs more than a little extra, especially with tile and flooring, where a second order may come from a different dye lot or production run.
Track actual waste in your job costing. If you keep ending up with leftover boxes, lower the factor; if you keep making extra supply runs, raise it. Leave a few spare pieces with the client for future repairs, and say so in the estimate.
