Cubic yard

A cubic yard is a unit of volume equal to a cube 3 feet on each side, or 27 cubic feet, used for concrete, soil, gravel and mulch.

To find cubic yards, multiply length × width × depth in feet, then divide by 27. A 10-by-10-foot slab 4 inches thick is 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 cubic feet, or about 1.23 cubic yards.

Convert inches to feet before multiplying: 4 inches is 0.333 feet and 6 inches is 0.5 feet. Mixing inches and feet is an easy way to order the wrong amount.

Order a little more than the math says. Forms bow, subgrades aren’t perfectly level, and running short during a pour is far worse than having some left over. Ready-mix suppliers can tell you their minimum order and any short-load charges.

Bulk materials such as gravel, topsoil and mulch are also sold by the cubic yard, though some suppliers sell by the ton. Ask for the conversion for that material, since a yard of gravel weighs much more than a yard of mulch. Dug soil also takes up more room than it did in the ground, so plan hauling for more volume than the hole.
