BuildWellRoofing square
A roofing square is a unit equal to 100 square feet of roof surface, used to measure roofs and order roofing materials.
Roofers price and order by the square. A roof with 2,400 square feet of surface is 24 squares. Shingles are sold in bundles, and many common shingles take three bundles per square, though some heavier products take more; check the wrapper.
Measure the roof surface, not the footprint of the house. Pitch adds area: a steep roof has more surface than the floor below it. Multiply the plan area by a pitch factor, or measure each plane directly, and include the overhangs.
Add waste for cuts. Simple gable roofs need less; hips, valleys, dormers and short runs need more. Starter strip, ridge cap, underlayment, drip edge and flashing are ordered separately, by length or by the roll rather than by the square.
Tear-off is often priced per square too, with an extra charge for each layer beyond the first. Note the number of existing layers and the condition of the deck in the estimate, and say how replacing rotten decking will be priced if you find it.
