What each app is

What is Invoice Simple?

Invoice Simple is an invoicing and estimating app for small businesses, freelancers and contractors; its about page says it’s headquartered in Vancouver, BC, and has been at it since 2014. It runs on iOS, Android and the web. You build documents from saved items and client details, convert an approved estimate to an invoice in one click, and take payments through Stripe, PayPal or both. Plans are priced by how many invoices you send each month, from 3 to unlimited, and a bookkeeping add-on and an AI Receptionist are sold separately in the US and Canada. [19][2][4][8][10][20][6][11]

What is BuildWell?

BuildWell is an estimating and invoicing app for contractors doing remodels, repairs and the common trades, on iPhone, Android and the web. You describe a job by voice, text, photos or a floor plan; the AI plans the work and quantities, and every price comes from data: materials at stores near the job, checked within 30 days, and labor at the Bureau of Labor Statistics median wage for each trade in your metro, plus your overhead and markup. Clients sign on their phone, the estimate becomes the invoice, and clients pay by card or bank transfer at Stripe’s cost. It’s one plan at $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year after a 3-day free trial, and it doesn’t do scheduling, dispatch, CRM, payroll, time tracking, GPS or accounting. [21][7][12][14][16][1]

Feature by feature

Writing the estimate

Invoice Simple: You add the customer’s details, list the services or products with prices and quantities, and add your logo, notes, photos or discounts, then send by email or text. Photos are part of Plus and Premium. When the client approves, one click converts the estimate to an invoice, carrying over the customer details, line items, notes and pricing. [10][2]

BuildWell: You describe the job by voice or text, add up to five photos or a floor plan, and BuildWell asks only the questions that change the price. It shows the plan of work in order first, then builds line items, each a unit of work with its own labor hours and materials. Every line, quantity, hour and price is editable, and a revision keeps the original and gets signed again. [7][21]

The difference: Invoice Simple builds the estimate from the items and prices you enter. BuildWell is built for jobs where working out the line items and quantities is the hard part. [10][7]

Where the prices come from

Invoice Simple: Prices are yours. Invoice Simple saves the line items and client details you use, so you can reuse and adjust them, import clients from phone contacts, and fill documents with predictive typing. Autofill of client and item details is on every plan. [8][2]

BuildWell: Prices come from real local data. Each material is priced at a store near the job, checked within the last 30 days, and labor is the Bureau of Labor Statistics median wage for that trade in your metro, plus the overhead, markups, sales tax and permit fee you set. A material with no store price is flagged for you to confirm before sending. Prices you type in are saved for next time. [7][21]

AI tools

Invoice Simple: Invoice Simple can draft a quick invoice from a short prompt you type or say. Separately, its AI Receptionist, sold as a paid add-on to its plans in the US and Canada, answers calls you miss at any hour, collects the caller’s name, contact details and job, and emails you a summary. [10][11]

BuildWell: AI does the estimating: it reads your words, photos and floor plan, plans the work and picks quantities, and you can ask it to revise the estimate after your own edits without losing them. It also makes before-and-after renders of the finished room from a photo, and logos. To do that, BuildWell shares job details and photos with Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, which you can turn off in your profile. [7][9]

The difference: Invoice Simple’s AI speeds up invoices and covers missed calls. BuildWell’s AI works on the estimate itself. [10][11][7]

Client approval and e-signatures

Invoice Simple: Client signatures are a Premium feature. With the signing setting on, the estimate email asks the client to review and sign; they press Sign, confirm their name, which appears in cursive, and the estimate then shows the signature and the date. The help center notes this signature is for presentation and is not legally binding. Plus adds your own business signature. [2][13]

BuildWell: Clients open the estimate on their phone, with no app or account, and accept and sign with a finger or decline. Their name and signature print on the signed estimate. You can send the link by text or email, copy it anywhere, share the PDF, or collect the signature in person on your own phone. Invoices can ask for a signature too. [12][14]

Invoices

Invoice Simple: Invoices go out by email, text or print, with discounts, photos and notes. Invoice Simple schedules recurring invoices that generate and send on their own, and clients can set recurring invoices to pay automatically. Plus adds summary reports, and Premium lists restoring previous invoices. [10][2]

BuildWell: A signed estimate becomes the invoice with the same lines and totals, or you start one from scratch for a small job. Terms are due on receipt, 7, 14 or 30 days. You can record cash and check payments, void an unpaid invoice and attach job photos and renders, which print after the invoice. [14]

Deposits and progress payments

Invoice Simple: Deposits are on Premium. On the invoice you ask for a deposit as a percentage of the total after tax or as a flat amount, and the balance due shows the deposit until it’s paid; then the invoice records the amount and date and subtracts it. It also describes taking partial payments on jobs under way. [15][2][10]

BuildWell: Invoice any percentage of the estimate as a deposit, then progress payments, then the balance, each as its own invoice against the estimate. Every payment is recorded against its invoice, so you always see what’s paid and what’s left. [14]

Online payments and fees

Invoice Simple: You connect Stripe, PayPal or both. Clients pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe Link or PayPal, plus ACH and Venmo in the US, and you can take cards in person with Stripe Tap to Pay or a QR code. US Stripe rates are 3.49% + 49¢ for cards, 1% + 30¢ capped at $15 for ACH and 2.79% + 49¢ for Tap to Pay, and you can pass any share of the fee to the client. [20][17]

BuildWell: Connect Stripe once and clients choose card or US bank account on the invoice page. Stripe’s fee is passed through at cost, 2.9% + 30¢ for a card and 0.8% capped at $5 for a bank transfer, and BuildWell adds no fee or surcharge of its own. You can also list your Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal or check details, which print on every invoice. [16]

The difference: Invoice Simple’s help center lists 3.49% + 49¢ for a US card payment through Stripe; BuildWell passes through Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ at cost. Invoice Simple lists more ways to pay, including PayPal and Venmo, and lets you pass any share of the fee to the client. [17][20][16]

Follow-up and reminders

Invoice Simple: Every plan shows real-time read receipts. Due date reminders start at Plus, and Invoice Simple describes sending reminders automatically. Invoices show as paid, unpaid or overdue, and you get a notice when a client pays. [2][18][20]

BuildWell: You see when the client opens the estimate and how many times, and get a notice when they accept, decline or pay. You can resend an estimate or invoice up to five times, so a client isn’t flooded. [12]

The BuildWell inbox showing when clients view estimates and pay

The difference: Both show when a client has looked; Invoice Simple can also send due date reminders for you. [2][12]

Templates and branding

Invoice Simple: Invoice Simple offers more than 60 templates, with premium templates on the Premium plan. You can change a template’s colors and add your logo, signature, standard notes and photos. The logo is saved and added to each new document, and documents carry no Invoice Simple branding. [18][2][22]

BuildWell: Six document templates carry your logo and colors, on either plan, and any estimate or invoice prints in English or Spanish. Signed estimates print the client’s name and signature, and AI renders of the finished room print as before-and-after pages. [1][5][12][9]

Devices, bookkeeping and support

Invoice Simple: Invoice Simple runs on iOS, Android and the web and syncs in real time between phone and computer. It tracks expenses by scanning receipts, and a paid bookkeeping add-on in the US and Canada links your bank, sorts expenses and builds profit-and-loss reports. Support is through a help center, a contact form and email. [4][6][18][23][24][2]

BuildWell: One subscription, bought on the App Store, Google Play or the web, covers BuildWell on iPhone, Android and the web, with everything in sync. On iPhones with LiDAR you can scan a room for its measurements. The app works in English or Spanish, support is by email from the support page, and it doesn’t do accounting. [5][25][1]

Pricing compared

Invoice Simple prices by volume: three plans set by how many invoices you send a month, each paid monthly or yearly, and its pricing page says going annual gets 2 months free. Prices are listed in US dollars. BuildWell is $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year, with every feature on both plans and fair-use limits on AI work and storage. [2][1]

Client signatures and deposits need Invoice Simple’s Premium plan, and its bookkeeping and AI Receptionist add-ons cost extra. Card processing comes on top in both apps: 3.49% + 49¢ through Invoice Simple in the US, and Stripe’s fee at cost through BuildWell. [2][6][11][17][16]

Common questions

01How do BuildWell and Invoice Simple prices compare?
BuildWell is $7.99 a week or $79.99 a year, with every feature on both plans. Invoice Simple is $6.99 a month for up to 3 invoices, $14.99 for up to 10 and $21.99 for unlimited, or $69.99, $149.99 and $219.99 a year. [1][2]
02Is there a free option?
Without a plan, Invoice Simple lets you create 2 documents and send 1, with no card needed, and it offers a 14-day trial of Premium. BuildWell has a 3-day free trial and no free plan. [4][3][1]
03Can clients sign estimates in Invoice Simple?
Yes, on Premium: the client confirms their name to sign, and the help center describes that signature as for presentation and not legally binding. Plus adds the business owner’s signature; Essentials lists neither. In BuildWell, clients sign estimates with a finger on their phone, on either plan. [2][13][12][1]
04What does each charge to take a payment?
Invoice Simple’s help center lists US Stripe fees of 3.49% + 49¢ for cards and 1% + 30¢ capped at $15 for ACH, and you can pass any share to the client. BuildWell passes through Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ for cards and 0.8% capped at $5 for bank transfers, with no fee of its own. [17][20][16]
05Can I take a deposit?
Yes, in both. Invoice Simple’s Premium plan requests a deposit on the invoice as a percentage or a flat amount. BuildWell invoices any percentage of the estimate as a deposit, then progress payments and the balance. [2][15][14]
06Does Invoice Simple use AI?
Its site describes drafting invoices from a typed or spoken prompt, and it sells an AI Receptionist add-on that answers missed calls. BuildWell’s AI plans whole estimates, priced from stores near the job and local BLS wages. [10][11][7]
