BuildWell

Quote

A quote is a fixed price offered for a specific scope of work, usually valid for a stated period, that the contractor commits to if the client accepts.

Where an estimate is an informed approximation, a quote is a commitment: this work, for this price. That makes quotes common for well-defined jobs, such as a water heater swap, a fence of known length or a service call with a flat rate.

Because you’re committing, a quote needs a precise scope and clear exclusions. Say what happens if conditions differ from what you saw, for example if you open a wall and find damage.

Put an expiration date on every quote. Material prices move, and your schedule fills up. Use a shorter window when prices for the materials involved are changing fast, and say what happens after the quote expires.

Clients don’t always know the difference between a quote and an estimate, and contractors use the words loosely too. Whatever you call the document, write on it whether the price is fixed or approximate, and get it signed before you start.
