Inspection
An inspection is a visit by a building official to check that permitted work meets code at a specific stage, before it’s covered up or occupied.
Inspections follow the order of the work. A typical sequence is footings or foundation, then framing and the rough plumbing, electrical and mechanical before walls are closed, insulation in some areas, and finals at the end. The permit lists the inspections required for the job.
Covering work before it’s inspected is the costly mistake: the inspector can make you open it back up. Plan the schedule so drywall and concrete pours wait for sign-off.
To pass the first time, walk the work yourself against the plans, have the approved plans and permit on site, and make sure the inspector can reach everything. If an item fails, fix it quickly and schedule the reinspection; some departments charge reinspection fees.
Keep a record of each result. Final inspections lead to the certificate of occupancy or the permit being closed, and an open permit can cause trouble years later when the house is sold.
