Callback
A callback is a return visit to a completed job to fix a problem, finish something missed or handle a warranty claim, usually without additional pay.
Callbacks are some of the most expensive hours a contractor works. There’s travel and setup, usually no invoice at the end, and they pull a crew away from paying work.
Common causes include items missed on the punch list, things that shift in the first few weeks (doors, drawers, caulk lines), unclear expectations about what the job included, and real defects in workmanship or materials.
Track every callback with the job, the cause, the time spent and the cost. Patterns show up quickly: one crew, one product, or one step that gets rushed. Fix the cause and the callbacks drop.
Some callbacks aren’t warranty issues at all: the client wants something new, or the damage came from misuse. Your written warranty and scope should make the difference clear, so you can price new work as new work. Handle real callbacks quickly and politely; the response is what the client remembers.
